What's the Best Time of Year to Have Your Gutters Cleaned?

There's no single 'best' time to clean gutters — but there are better and worse times. Here's how to time your cleaning visits for maximum effect.

The most common recommendation is twice a year: once in spring and once in autumn. This schedule addresses the two peak periods of debris accumulation — spring blossom, seeds and early moss growth, and autumn leaf fall — and ensures your system is clear before the heaviest rainfall of the year.

Late November is often cited as the ideal time for an autumn clean. By this point, the majority of deciduous trees have shed their leaves, meaning you're not cleaning gutters only to have them fill up again within a week. Cleaning in early to mid-October — while leaves are still falling — is less efficient and may leave you needing a second visit.

Spring cleaning in March or April addresses the debris that accumulates over winter — decomposed leaves, moss, and seeds from early-flowering trees. It also gives you the opportunity to inspect the system for any frost damage that occurred over winter before the rainy spring weather creates problems.

For properties under heavy tree cover — common in areas like Heswall, Thornton Hough, Irby and Barnston — a third visit in July or August may be warranted. Some tree species shed seeds and organic material throughout the growing season, and a mid-summer check can prevent unexpected blockages in late summer storms.

The worst time to clean gutters is when they're actively blocked and causing a problem. By that point, some damage may already have occurred. Regular preventive cleaning — on a schedule based on your property's specific needs — is always preferable to reactive maintenance.
