Gutters are easy to overlook — they sit out of sight and rarely demand attention until something has gone wrong. But spotting the early warning signs of a blocked or damaged gutter system can save you hundreds of pounds in water damage repair costs. Here are the five most common signs that your gutters need professional attention.
1. Water spilling over the edge. The most obvious sign of a blocked gutter is water overflowing during rain, particularly at one or more points along the run. This indicates a blockage that's preventing water from reaching the downpipe. Left untreated, this overflow will saturate the wall below, leading to damp and mould.
2. Plants growing in your gutters. If you can see green growth — grass, moss, or even small plants — in your gutters from ground level, they've been blocked for some time. Organic material has decomposed into a layer of soil that's now hosting plant life. This adds significant weight to the gutter system and risks pulling brackets from the fascia board.
3. Sagging or pulling away from the fascia. Gutters filled with debris become extremely heavy. If you notice gutters pulling away from the fascia board or visibly sagging between brackets, debris weight is likely the cause. This is a structural issue that needs addressing quickly — a fallen gutter can cause serious damage to whatever is below.
4. Staining on external walls. Long streaks of dark staining on brickwork or render below gutter lines indicate that water has been overflowing for some time. Even if the gutters aren't currently overflowing, historic staining suggests past blockages — and fresh staining is a clear signal that cleaning is overdue.
5. Damp patches or mould indoors. Water ingress from gutters typically appears first as damp patches on upper-floor walls or ceilings — particularly in rooms adjacent to external walls. If you notice musty smells or damp areas that track back to an external wall, check the condition of the gutters and fascias on that elevation.
