How to Spot Gutter Damage Before It Gets Worse

You don't need to climb a ladder to check your gutters. Here's how to spot the early signs of gutter damage from ground level.

Most gutter problems give clear warning signs long before they cause serious damage — if you know what to look for. The good news is that many of these signs are visible from ground level, meaning you don't need to get on a ladder to assess the condition of your system.

The most obvious sign is water overflowing during or after rain. Stand at ground level during a heavy shower and watch the gutters. Water should flow smoothly into the downpipes; any overflow at a point along the run indicates a blockage or a section that's out of alignment. If you notice a consistent drip in the same location, it may indicate a cracked section or a joint that's failed.

Sagging or deflection in the gutter line is another clear warning sign. Healthy gutters run in a straight line with a very slight fall towards the downpipe. If you can see any point where the gutter dips or bows downward, debris is almost certainly causing excess weight, or a bracket has failed. Both issues will get worse over time without intervention.

Look for rust staining on brick or render beneath the gutter line. This orange-brown staining comes from metal brackets corroding as water sits against them — a reliable indicator that water is pooling or overflowing at that location. Similarly, dark vertical streaks on the wall below gutters suggest water has been running down the face of the guttering itself, rather than through the system.

Finally, look at the fascia boards where the gutters attach. Any dark staining, splitting, or visible deterioration of the UPVC surface suggests that water has been in contact with this area for an extended period — likely from a blocked or overflowing gutter above. Catching fascia deterioration early can save you the cost of full replacement boards.
